Nationwide tract-level data (including Puerto Rico) extracted from Summary File 1 (2000 census) These files are provided on an "as is" basis. There is no guarantee that the data files are error-free. Please advise if you encounter problems. Data Set: Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF 1) 100-Percent Data -- PCT 1 to PCT 11 Summary File 1 census tract counts are provided for over forty American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and for groups within race categories. The race categories also include eighteen Asian groups and twelve Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander groups. Counts of people of Hispanic origin (twenty-eight Hispanic or Latino groups) are also tallied. A detailed explanation of the SF1 data can be found online at American FactFinder. Tract-level data is the lowest geographic level available for the race by category dataset. Also merged into each of the files are selected fields from the PL94-171 file showing single race and some multi-race counts by tract. These PL94-171 counts include Hispanics across all listed categories. Population field names follow an arbitrary 40 character-limit to facilitate importation into Maptitude. Most field names follow Maptitude's SF-1 nomenclature. If you wish to analyze the full SF1 dataset for a single state, Caliper's SF-1 add-in for Maptitude 4.6 is as good as it gets (i.e., excellent). Complete state-level datasets for SF1 are available from Caliper here: http://www.caliper.com/DataCDs/SF1DataCD.htm Complete state-level datasets for the sample SF3 file (socio-ecomomic) are also available from Caliper here: http://www.caliper.com/DataCDs/SF3DataCD.htm These zipped files are in a comma-delimited format. Field names are in the first row. Population totals for higher levels of geography can be calculated using GIS or database software from these tract-level files. Note, however, that values for the "location" field were derived using a GIS overlay depicting census places and populated places. One "location" is arbitrarily assigned per census tract even though the tract may, in fact, cover several locations. Therefore, the "location" field in these files cannot be used for higher-level aggregations. Note that data for Puerto Rico is included with these files, so in order to match American FactFinder's National totals for the 50 states and DC, you must first filter out the Puerto Rico tracts. Sample maps for two population subcategories -- Cambodian and Guatemalan -- can be downloaded via an FTP directory. The map files are named as follows: state_county__tract__number of persons by primary SF1 category (e.g., Latino) __location__number of persons by subcategory (e.g., Guatemalan). The full file name details should appear at the bottom of your browser. An interactive mapping application displaying American Indian population attributes is also available: American Indian and Alaska Native
Asian-American
Maps (Asian-American by subcategory) Note: Census tract labels on these maps show total single-race Asian population. Labels with black background and white letters depict tracts with 100 or more persons of Cambodian origin.
